Literacy Department

The Glendale Library, Arts & Culture Literacy Center serves the literacy needs of the Glendale business and residential community. Our programs are free and address the English literary needs of adults ages eighteen and over. The Adult Literacy program is partially funded through the California Library Literacy Services, which is a program of the California State Library. The ESL program is fully funded through the California Library Literacy Services, which is a program of the California State Library.

OUR SERVICES

ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM

Our Adult Literacy program offers services to help adult improve their English reading, writing, speaking and Math skills. The Adult Literacy program is free and open to all adults ages eighteen and older.  

  • One-on-one Tutoring- Trained volunteer tutors will work in a one-on-one setting with learners to help them achieve their specific educational goals. Registration is required.  

  • Intermediate to Advanced Conversation Class- The Conversation Class is intended for students who have an intermediate to advanced proficiency skill level of English. The conversation class is held concurrently in person at the Central library and online via Zoom.  

ESL Services 

Our Adult ESL program offers services to help adults learn to read, write, and speak English. The Adult ESL program is free and open to all adults over the ages eighteen and older.  

  • One-on-one Tutoring- Trained volunteer tutors will work in a one-on-one setting with learners to help them achieve their specific educational goals. Registration is required. 

  • ESL Conversation classes-ESL classes are intended to introduce English language concepts and skills to students with limited to no English language speaking skills.  

Mixed level classes are available at the Central Library, Casa Verdugo Library, Montrose Library, and Library Connection @Adams Square. Registration is Required. Please contact the Literacy Center at 818.548.6450 for current class schedule.   

Services for both ESL and Literacy Students  

  • Technology Clinic- Students can make an appointment to receive assistance with a personal digital device. Appointments are 45mins in length and available at the Central Library. Registration is required.  

  • Technology Loan Program- Surface Pro Laptops are Now Available for checkout through the Literacy Center. Participants must be eighteen years or older and enrolled in GCC Garfield campus or Literacy Center classes. Proof of enrollment is required. Laptops may be checked out for three weeks at a time of the duration of a GCC Garfield Campus semester. Checkouts are limited to one laptop per household. Must be in good standing with the library to participate.

  • English Conversation Lounge- The English Conversation lounge is intended to provide a space for students to practice their English speaking and writing skills in a relaxed and comfortable environment. This is an ongoing program, walk ins are welcome, no registration required. 

  • English Computer Basics Class I (Open to the public)- In this class adults will learn the basics of how to navigate a computer using a Surface Pro laptop. Class is held in English. Registration is required. Please contact the Literacy Center at 818.548.6450 for current class schedule.  

  • Citizenship Classes (Open to the public)- Students learn the English, Civics, and History requirements to pass the test and become a United States Citizen.  Registration is required. Please contact the Literacy Center at 818.548.6450 for current class schedule. 


ADULT ESL PROGRAM

 

Learn to communicate with neighbors, employers, and make friends in the beautiful City of Glendale! Classes are for adults 18+ and older, all languages are welcome. Must register with the Literacy Center to participate. Space is limited.

Clases de Conversación en Inglés Como Segundo Lenguaje 

Aprenda a comunicarse con sus vecinos, empleadores y a hacer amigos en la hermosa ciudad de Glendale. Las clases son para adultos mayores de 18 años, todos los idiomas son bienvenidos. Debe inscribirse en el Centro de Alfabetización para participar. El espacio es limitado.

OUR INSTRUCTORS

Our instructors are trained volunteer tutors.  Our tutors provide either one-to-one instruction to qualifying individual learners or small-group instruction based on common group goals.   

For the one-to-one instruction, our volunteer tutors currently meet weekly with students through a videoconferencing platform like Zoom, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp, Webex, etc. or in person.

LEARNERS

The Adult Literacy Program helps adults who want to improve their English as well as English-speaking adults who need to improve their reading and writing skills. 

Qualifying Learners are required to pass our assessment test and have at least one of the following learning goals:

VOLUNTEERS
 
 

Adult Literacy One-on-One Tutoring 

Our volunteer tutors work one-on-one with student/s who have various entry levels of proficiency in English to help them achieve their educational goals, such as improving basic reading, writing, and speaking skills. No prior teaching experience is necessary.  

  • ESL One-on-One Tutoring 

Our volunteer tutors work one-on-one with student/s who have no proficiency or an entry level of proficiency in English to help them achieve their English goals, from communicating in spoken English to reading and writing. No prior teaching experience is necessary. 

A minimum commitment of one hour per week is required 

Volunteers must be 18 years or older to participate 

All volunteers are required to undergo a background check 

  • Teen Volunteer Opportunity 

Teens can submit conversation questions to the literacy center and receive volunteer credits. Please see the Teen Volunteer Opportunities page for more information: EGlendaleLAC.org/Teens-Volunteer-Opportunities
