Help others find their next great book to read! Our Teen Speak Blog is a place where teens in Glendale review books they are currently reading and tell their honest opinions. Read any book you like, write a one paragraph summary (75 words minimum), and then tell us your opinion about the book in a second paragraph (100 words minimum). All types of books are welcome: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Comic Books, Graphic Novels, Manga, or any other book you choose.  

You Will Gain 

One hour of Community Service Volunteer Credit per book review. You can submit multiple book reviews if you would like  

Experience practicing critical thinking skills, and writing the book review from your unique perspective  

Experience writing content that will be displayed on a public blog  

Knowledge about a new book that you will read, and we hope you will enjoy the book review process!

You receive community service volunteer credit  

Description  

Assist Literacy Department staff by sending them a list of interesting questions that can be used during their conversation programs when teaching English language classes, or to help people practice speaking English. Send at least 15 of your best questions in a Microsoft Word document, on a wide variety of topics to SDiffenderfer@GlendaleCA.gov. Questions should be professional, but should be about fun, relevant topics, and should sound like questions that you might really hear someone say in a conversation. Your questions should include different types of vocabulary words if possible.  

Example Questions:  

Do you like going to the Farmer’s Market? What do you like to buy when you go to the Farmer’s Market?  

Do you have a dog? What is your new dog’s name? He is so cute, and he reminds me of a Capybara.  

Do you like to ride rollercoasters? Why or why not?   

What do you like to do on the weekend for fun?  

You Will Gain 

Community Service Volunteer Hours depending on how many Word documents, of 15 questions each, you send to the Teen Services Librarian (You can send in up to 5, for a maximum of 5 volunteer hours) 

Skills that help you learn about how to create questions for people who are learning English as a second, third, or fourth language 

Skills that help you learn about how to create a professional document  

Time Commitment  

You can decide to send the librarian only one Microsoft Word document containing 15 questions, for 1 hour of volunteer credit, or you can send up to 5 documents containing 15 questions each, for up to 5 hours of volunteer credit!  

Complete this questionnaire to earn one hour of community service credit. All you need to do is watch or listen to an entire episode of Teen G.E.N. Talks to answer the questions. You can watch or listen as many episodes as you like, and are eligible to earn one hour of community service per questionnaire. Important Things to know:

The episode must be an official numbered episode, not a special or mini episode.

All submission will be reviewed for content and readiness for publication on the Teen G.E.N. page.

Qualifying submissions will receive one hour of volunteer service. 

Submissions that do not qualify will receive an email outlining how to revise the submission in order to earn volunteer services.  This may include spelling, grammar, minimum word count and engagement.  We are looking for more than one word answers or answers that do not show if the viewer watched the show. 

A minimum word count will be required for select questions.  Make to double check you meet the minimum requirements before submitting.

Once you submit your review, please note that it will take a week or longer before you receive a confirmation email. Give yourself plenty of time! ription
