On February 3, 2015, the Glendale Police Department was presented with a $2,500.00 donation from the Glendale Adventist Medical Center. The donation will provide uniformed officers with immediate access to life-saving tourniquets.

Police officers are often the first responders to an emergency scene, and being equipped with tourniquets will assist the officers with a life-saving device prior to the arrival of medical personnel.

Recent studies show that the number one cause of preventable death following a traumatic injury is excessive blood loss. Studies also show that the best way to stop blood loss is to apply a tourniquet, which can boost survival rates by 90 percent and prevent possible amputation.

In addition to the donation from the Glendale Adventist Medical Center, the Glendale Police Foundation has provided additional funding of $1,600.00 to ensure the 150 police vehicle trauma bags are equipped with tourniquets.

“I am very appreciative of the generous partnership between Glendale Adventist Medical Center and the Glendale Police Foundation to fund the purchase of these tourniquets,” said Chief Robert Castro.  “These tourniquets will add an additional medical tool for our field personnel to use during the proper emergency to save a life.”

The Glendale Police Department was currently seeking the purchase of tourniquets when the financial assistance was offered by the Glendale Adventist Medical Center and the Glendale Police Foundation.

"This is an investment in a great innovation whereby police officers will be equipped to provide life-saving medical care. Glendale Adventist Medical Center applauds this improvement in safety and is honored to support the needs of our police department,” said Kevin Roberts, RN, CEO.

The donation is a prime example of the active and ongoing partnership between the Glendale Police Department, community members and business leaders within the City of Glendale. Providing necessary tools for public safety through grants and donations enables the department to fund other safety equipment and essential services.

A previous medical tool introduced in 2007, were Automatic External Defibrillator, (AED’s).  The Glendale Police Department equipped several police vehicles with an AED for restoring a regular heart rhythm during a sudden cardiac arrest.
