Power Renews The Peak Day Alert Program to Help Customers Save Energy During Peak Times

Innovative Behavioral Demand Response Solution Reduced Peak Demand by Six Percent Last Summer

Glendale, CA - June 24, 2015 - Glendale Water & Power today announced the continuation of its partnership with Opower (NYSE:OPWR), to support customers in saving energy during peak hours using Opower’s behavioral demand response (BDR) solution, Peak Day Alerts. The companies also released the results of last summer’s BDR program, which empowered GWP customers to reduce peak demand by six percent while driving an 85% customer satisfaction rate.

In summer 2014, Glendale enrolled customers in the Peak Day Alert Program  to unlock the full potential of the utility’s advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and amplify energy savings during high-cost, peak hours. By providing customers with personalized insights before and after peak days, Glendale successfully motivated households to reduce peak demand without devices or price signals.  Results proved that behavioral efficiency and demand response solutions complement each other, directly engaging customers in the process of shifting their own energy usage patterns.

“Glendale has always sought to provide our customers with the information and tools they need to save both energy and money, our new AMI system and the continuation of our work with Opower is a clear testament to that commitment,” said Steve Zurn, General Manager of Glendale Water & Power . “Opower’s innovative BDR program has helped us meet demand management goals while delivering a positive customer experience, and we are looking forward to increased energy savings in 2015.”

“Glendale already had a robust behavioral efficiency program in place, but the addition of Opower’s BDR solution has unlocked even greater savings for its customers,” said Dan Yates, CEO of Opower. “Glendale’s commitment to providing its customers with reliable, cost-effective, and innovative services are yielding significant results, and Opower is looking forward to our continued relationship.”

Glendale tested BDR across two customer groups: homes that were already receiving energy efficiency, and homes that weren’t. This method allowed Glendale to measure the impact of efficiency and peak solutions separately and in combination. Ultimately, Glendale’s implementation of BDR proves that a deep, personalized understanding of consumer needs and opportunities can significantly reduce energy consumption during peak demand hours.
