The Brand Associates Presents "Walk the Talk: The Los Angeles Mural Program"

Glendale, CA – The Brand Associates are pleased to host a presentation by Executive Director of The Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles, Isabel Rojas-Williams, entitled “Walk the Talk: The Los Angeles Mural Program”.   The presentation is on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 7:00 pm.  The venue is the Brand Library & Art Center (Recital Hall), 1601 W. Mountain St, Glendale, 91201.  The talk includes a question and answer period followed by a reception.  This event is free and open to the public.   Complimentary parking is available in Brand Park adjacent to the library and an accessible entrance and parking are available on the east side of the building.

Ms. Rojas-Williams will share highlights of her vast experience in bringing public mural programs to Los Angeles and other municipalities in the LA area. Ms. Rojas-Williams will also share her perspective on steps Glendale can take to realize a successful mural program. In her role as Executive Director of The Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles, Rojas-Williams had a major role in crafting the mural ordinance signed by LA Mayor Garcetti in 2013, which lifted the 2002 mural moratorium on private properties in Los Angeles. Cindy Cleary, City of Glendale Director of Library, Arts and Culture, says “Street murals are always pleasant surprises that enliven a city’s landscape and provide artists a canvas unlike any other.  We are honored to host Ms. Rojas-Williams at the Brand Library & Art Center to share her experience, answer questions and inspire us to bring murals to Glendale.”

Rojas-Williams’  presentation at Brand Library coincides with the Brand Annual Works on Paper Exhibition (Brand 43), juried this year by her longtime friend and colleague, famed muralist Kent Twitchell.  Rojas-Williams and Twitchell worked together in support of the new LA mural ordinance.  Brand 43 will be on view at Brand Library Art Galleries from September 26 through October 30, 2015.

In October 2014, the Los Angeles City Council honored Isabel Rojas-Williams as one of the fifteen "Latinas in the Arts" who has made a significant impact in the cultural landscape of Los Angeles.

Further background on Isabel Rojas-Williams: Ms. Rojas-Williams, a native of Santiago, Chile, has lived in Southern California since 1973.  She has actively studied, documented, and lectured on the social-political art movements of Los Angeles. Ms. Rojas-Williams earned her Master’s degree at California State University, Los Angeles.  Her thesis "Los Angeles Street Mural Movement, 1930-2009" is included in the research archives of Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros in México City.

Rojas-Williams has received numerous awards for her curatorial, civic, and creative contributions to Los Angeles. In 2009, she was appointed as an advisor for the “Siqueiros Interpretative Center” and served as Mayor Villaraigosa's art liaison (2009-2013) to the Latino Heritage Committee, African American Committee, and Asian American Committee.  She also currently serves as vice president of Los Angeles-Mexico Sister Cities program.
