“Smarter than a Scammer” to Educate Residents on Scam Avoidance

The City of Glendale has partnered with local social services non-profit Wise & Healthy Aging to present “Smarter than a Scammer,” a free educational forum dedicated to helping residents identify and avoid scams. The event will be occurring on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Glendale Police Department Community Room.

Modern day scammers employ a wide variety of refined techniques and scenarios in their mission to take advantage of well-meaning community members. The goal of “Smarter than a Scammer” is to educate residents so they are empowered to avoid being swindled and scammed.

Attendees will be able to enjoy a light lunch while listening to presentations from the following professional speakers:

  • Robert Castro, Chief, Glendale Police Department
  • Belle Chen, Deputy DA, Elder Abuse Section, LA County District Attorney’s Office
  • Matt Zakarian, Detective, Glendale Police Department
  • Renee Focht, Postal Inspector, United States Postal Inspectors
  • Jackie Wiley-Sistrunk, Education and Outreach Coordinator, Department of Business Oversight

Representatives from the Social Security Administration, Department of Consumer Affairs, and Adult Protective Services will also be speaking.
