Bicyclist Fatality

At 2:04 pm on May 2, 2013 the Glendale Fire and Police Departments received numerous 911 calls of a child that was struck by a school bus. The accident had occurred at the intersection of Riverdale and Columbus in the city of Glendale. As Police and Fire personnel arrived, they discovered the child was trapped under the bus. Fire Department personnel were able to extricate the child and immediately assess his injuries. The child was transported to Memorial Hospital. The male, 13 years of age, was pronounced dead at 3:04 pm by hospital staff. He is identified at Jonathan Hernandez and is a student at Roosevelt Middle School. GUSD was on scene and have made preparations to have counselors on campus Friday morning for its students.

The preliminary investigation by GPD Traffic Investigators indicates that the child was riding his bicycle westbound on the south sidewalk of Riverdale without a helmet and entered the intersection at Columbus without yielding. At that very moment the private school bus, operated by First Student, entered the intersection traveling north when the collision occurred. At the time of the collision, there were no children on the bus.

The driver was transported to Glendale Adventist Hospital for evaluation. She is identified as Barbara Calderon, 58 years, of Pasadena.
