CITY OF GLENDALE RELEASES ROCKHAVEN PROPOSALS

GLENDALE – In an effort to encourage an open and engaged review process, the City of Glendale released the proposals submitted in response to a Request for Proposals (“RFP”) seeking qualified firms for the development of the City-owned Rockhaven Site, located at 2713 Honolulu Avenue, Glendale, CA, 91020.

On March 17, 2016, the City of Glendale issued the RFP seeking qualified firms for the development of Rockhaven into three separate concepts:

  1. A Medical/Mental-Health Related Facility;
  2. A Boutique Lifestyle Commercial Center; and/or
  3. A Park/Other Development.

The RFP submittal deadline was on August 11, 2016. Seven firms submitted a proposal. These firms include:

  • Avalon Investment Company and Creative Space
  • Brooks Street and the Lab
  • Cliffside Malibu
  • Houk Development Company
  • Gangi Design Led Build
  • Metro Investments
  • Summit Senior Life

Rockhaven refers to the Rockhaven Sanitarium, which was founded by Agnes Richards in 1923 at the Site. It began with a single building, a two-story Craftsman-style “Rockhouse,” which remained the centerpiece of the Site until its demolition following damage in the 1971 earthquake. Over time, Richards acquired neighboring Craftsman homes to incorporate them into a women’s-only facility and one of the first private mental health institutions in California.

The City remains dedicated to maintaining the Site’s historic nature while creating open space and accessibility, ensuring compatibility with the neighborhood, and seeking ways in which the site can be utilized by community groups.

The City Council will be presented with a summary of proposals at a public meeting at 3 p.m. on November 1, 2016, at Glendale City Hall, 613 E. Broadway. Review the proposals.
