The second week of April is designated National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. This week, the Glendale Police Department recognizes our police communications operators for their dedication and service they provide to the City of Glendale.
In 2017, the Communications Bureau managed 225,539 incoming calls. Of this number, 55,938 were 9-1-1 emergency calls. The state standard is 95% of all 9-1-1 calls should be answered within 15 seconds. Glendale Police Communications Operators answered 99.76% of 9-1-1 calls in fewer than 15 seconds.
The 911 technology not only instantly provides the location, address and phone number from where the call was made, but also allows cellular phone callers to be located using latitude and longitude coordinates. The dispatcher is the critical link between the individual in need and the responding officers. Being a member of the Communications Bureau is extremely rewarding, as each team member exhibits pride, dedication and integrity, as well as the highest quality of customer service to the Glendale community.
Because each incoming call is unique and can vary from a request for general information to a report of a life threatening incident, the police communications officer must ask specific questions to accurately prioritize the call. The faster this critical information is obtained determines how quickly the first responder can provide the services needed. The police communications officer’s most important focus is citizen and officer safety.
