GFD responds to a Hazardous Material release

Hazardous Material Response

(Glendale, CA) On Tuesday, April 8, 2014, 11 units from Glendale and Burbank Fire Departments (1 Battalion command team, 4 engine companies, 1 truck company, 2 hazardous material units, 1 air utility, and 2 basic life support ambulances) were dispatched to a hazardous material release at 1200 N. Central Avenue in the city of Glendale.

Glendale Engine 26 was first to arrive on scene and discovered a white haze escaping out of the loading dock area to the rear of the store. Upon further investigation, the haze was located in the butcher’s kitchen area and it quickly spread throughout the store. Patrons and employees were evacuated by fire personnel to a safe refuge area and assessed for injuries.  Hazardous Material team members conducted an investigation to reveal that the haze was a refrigerant material. Firefighters used mechanical blowers to remove the haze from the store.  The source of the leak was located and controlled.

The Glendale Fire Department paramedics assessed nine patients at the scene for medical issues. One patient was transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation.

Glendale Fire Department resources were on scene for 5 hours and 04 minutes. The Glendale Police Department conducted traffic control and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health inspected the safety of the food products in the store. There was $50,000 in content damages as a result of this incident.
