ReflectSpace is an intimate and immersive gallery that offers patrons an opportunity to experience a unique connection with the artwork and the content presented. Co-Curator of ReflectSpace, Ara Oshagan said, “by allowing patrons to view the artists working on these pieces in the space, we give the community greater access to an artists’ intentions in their process and work, allowing them a deeper understanding of the pieces they encounter.”

“By being privy to the artists’ process and way of working through the Open Studio Residency program, library patrons will be able to connect much more deeply and meaningfully with the work being created and displayed. And by extension, the issues and histories being presented. The Residency program represents a major commitment by the library to deeply engage our communities in art and culture and support local and international artists,” said Oshagan.

In Search of the Lost Heart by Jin-woo Kim is a re-imagining of the greatest military creation in Korean history, transformed into a symbol of resistance to Japanese colonialism and violence. Kim’s ship is formidable and color-laden. It carries the silhouettes of a young woman and a butterfly on its tower and has interactive LED light features that are activated by a motion sensor placed in the ship’s tower.

Artist Han Ho’s Eternal light - 21c The Last Judgment addresses epic metaphysical issues. The large multi-panel work is drawn from Michelangelo's masterpiece, The Last Judgment. Han Ho’s work riffs off Michelangelo’s core ideas of good and evil, constructing the afterimage of humankind as exposed to the dangers of colonization, violence, and nuclear annihilation.

The exhibition will open on Saturday, July 30 at 5 pm at ReflectSpace at the Glendale Central Library. The opening will be followed by a Comfort Women day commemoration event at the library’s second floor auditorium at 6 pm.
