ReCollect by Cat Chiu Phillips

Artist Installation at Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station

GLENDALE, CA – Artist Cat Chiu Phillips’ installation titled ReCollect is on display at the Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station now through Friday, March 31. ReCollect creates a unique experience combining post-consumer product innovation and sustainability while paying homage to traditional craft methods and the handmade. One of Philips’ fondest childhood memories of growing up in Malina was when traditional parols– ornamental lanterns traditionally made of bamboo and Japanese paper– lighted the city to mark the holiday season. ReCollect is inspired by his childhood wonderment and fascination with light and color, especially how both reveal and conceal their immediate environment.

This project is made of 35mm slides that create awe and wonder on the transformative aspects of electronic waste while offering a dialogue on sustainability, recycling, and conservation. The materials used to create the parols in ReCollect are from obsolete audiovisual materials. Additionally, the project recognizes the support of environmental and ecological efforts and honoring a distinctive cultural icon from the Philippines. ReCollect is representative of the small community of Filipinos within the City of Glendale and surrounding areas.
