Glendale Library, Arts & Culture and GUSD celebrate Reflections PTA Art program winners

GLENDALE, CA— On Saturday, April 1, from 4-6pm, Glendale Library, Arts & Culture will host a collaborative celebration at Central Library for GUSD’s Council PTA National Reflections Arts program winners. National PTA has a long-standing commitment to arts education. The Reflections program provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts, which boosts student confidence and success in the arts and life.

Each year, over 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme. This 50+-year-old program helps them explore their thoughts, feelings, and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence, and find a love for learning that will help them succeed in school and life. Students participate in the appropriate division for their grade: Primary (Pre-K - Grade 2), Intermediate (Grades 3-5), Middle School (Grades 6-8), High School (Grades 9-12), Special Artist (All grades welcome). Students submit their completed works of art in one or all available categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts.

This year’s art theme was “Show your voice.” There were 537 art entries submitted at the school sites throughout Glendale Unified, and 123 were judged at the Council PTA level. Thirty outstanding interpretation winners were then judged at First District PTA. From these 30, 5 artists competed in the State competition: Natalie Sargisyan (Glendale High - Dance), Daisy Kim (Mountain Avenue Elementary - Visual Arts), Aren Zakarian (Rosemont Middle - Special Artist, Literature), Irina Riabova (Hoover High - Special Artist, Visual Arts) and Mikayla Respicio (Glendale High - Special Artist, Music Composition).

From the State competition, two artists will be moving forward to the next level of competition at Nationals:  Irina Riabova (Hoover High - Special Artist, Visual Arts) and Mikayla Respicio (Glendale High - Special Artist, Music)

The winning pieces can be viewed at Central Library Auditorium at 222 East Harvard Street Glendale, CA 91205, on April 1 from 4-6pm, online and from April 3-11 at Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station, an art space sponsored by the Glendale Arts and Culture Commission and the Community Services & Parks Department at 1020 East Palmer Avenue, Glendale CA.
