Earth Day & Beyond

GLENDALE, CA —Glendale Library, Arts & Culture and the City of Glendale Office of Sustainability are pleased to announce programs throughout April and May to celebrate “Earth Day & Beyond”, programs and conversations to implement everyday practices towards a greener Glendale.  

Programs include: 

Mend It! 

Grow your sustainability tools by learning to make minor repairs to your clothing. Must Bring: Project(s) to fix together, for example: missing buttons, hem or hole. 

June 8, 2023 • 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM  

Patch It! 

Learn how to turn old denim and jeans into new products and clothes. Must bring denim items, such as jeans or a jean jacket. 

April 26, 2023 • 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM

Update It! 

Give your old clothes new life by upcycling them! Must Bring: 1 or more clothing items from their closet.

Earth Day Fair – Saturday, April 22 11:00am – 3:00pm at Pacific Park Library 501 South Pacific Avenue Glendale, CA 91205 

Celebrate our planet at this unique fair with something for all ages! Join us for family-fun activities, sustainable local vendors, food, music, and interactive workshops. 

Come and learn more about local initiatives and how to get involved in climate change action.

11:10 AM - Land Acknowledgement and Welcome - Stage  

11:30 AM  - We Tell Stories presents "Earth Tales" - Stage  
A live storytelling performance featuring stories exploring the relationship between Mother Earth and her children. Presented in partnership with the Music Center.  Perfect for children in grades K - 5. 

12:30 PM - Solar Power 101 - Stage  
An Introduction to the history of solar power, presented by Solar Schoolhouse. 

12:30 PM - Sustainability Story Time  - inside Pacific Park Library  
Fun stories about the Earth presented by Glendale Library staff in English. 

1:00 PM - Cool Critters Show presented by Mobile Zoo of California - Stage  
Learn about various furry, feathered, and scaly critters in this fun fact filled show. 

1:30 PM - Sustainability Story Time (Spanish) - Pacific Library  
Fun stories about the Earth presented by Glendale Library staff in Spanish. 

2:15 PM - Composting Demonstration (Spanish) - Stage   
Learn how to compost in your back yard in this presentation by Go 2 Zero, presented in Spanish. 

2:30 PM - Sustainability Story Time - Pacific Park Library  
Fun stories about the Earth presented by Glendale Library staff in Armenian. 

2:40 PM - Composting Demonstration - Stage 
Learn how to compost in your back yard in this presentation by Go 2 Zero. 

Carbon Conversations 

A Guide to Climate Revolution – April 20, 6:00PM at Central Library 

How do we talk about the climate crisis with youth? 

What society-wide changes can we work towards at home and in our City to tackle the climate crisis and climate justice? 

Join us for a presentation by Mary DeMocker, author of The Parents’ Guide to Climate Revolution: 100 Ways to Build a Fossil-Free Future, Raise Empowered Kids, and Still Get a Good Night’s Sleep, and a panel of youth climate activists on how we can work together for a thriving future for all.  

6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Glendale Central Library, 222 E Harvard St, Glendale, CA 91205

Shaping the Energy Future of Glendale – April 27, 6:00PM at Central Library 

What could Glendale’s green energy future look like? Joins us for an evening presentation on how to revolutionize and build resilience in our energy and power systems in Glendale.

Joins us for an evening presentation on how to revolutionize and build resilience in our energy and power systems in Glendale by Ted Flannigan, energy expert, founder of EcoMotion, and host of Flanigan’s Eco-Logic Podcast, followed by a panel of energy experts and community leaders.  

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for this event. 

All programs are free and open to the public, these programs  are  supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

The Sustainability Officer facilitates sustainability planning and action for the City of Glendale, striving to foster a more livable, sustainable, and equitable community. 

The mission of the City of Glendale’s Office of Sustainability is to help meet the needs of Glendale’s residents and businesses today, as well as to help preserve the ability of future generations to meet their sustainability needs. To this end the Office will: 

Coordinate City of Glendale departments to promote sustainable practices and resiliency to climate change, inspiring participation throughout the City. 

Respond to public inquiries on sustainability matters and direct residents and businesses to appropriate City services. 

Design and promote initiatives to spur greater gains in efficiency and sustainable practices, including rewards and recognition programs.
