City of Glendale Cooling Centers

Glendale, CA – In anticipation of the upcoming heat wave, the City of Glendale Community Services & Parks Department is activating four community centers throughout the city as cooling centers from Tuesday, August 15, 2023, through Wednesday, August 16, 2023. For the latest information regarding cooling centers, please visit GlendaleCA.gov/BeatTheHeat.

The City of Glendale is highly encouraging those who do not have a cool place to be during the hottest time of the day to come to one of four community centers located throughout the city to beat the heat and cool off. Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash at all times.

The Community Services & Parks Department also has the Cooling Fan Assistance Program available to eligible seniors who live within the boundaries of the City of Glendale. The program’s goal is to help low-income seniors in Glendale keep cool when the temperatures rise. The program provides one free fan to elderly residents 60 years of age or older who live in the City of Glendale and meet other eligibility requirements. The program enables seniors to remain comfortable while remaining at home. For more information and eligibility criteria regarding the Cooling Fan Assistance Program, please call (818) 548-3775.

We also have various options to keep cool through water play.  Our splash pads are open 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily at Pacific Park and Cerritos Park. Our wading pools are open to the public on alternating days at Dunsmore Park, Brand Park, Fremont Park, Glenoaks Park and Palmer Park. Additionally, our Pacific Community Pool is open daily for recreation swim. You can learn more about each of these options and the hours of operation by going to our aquatics’ website GlendaleAquatics.org.

If you plan to be outdoors, please take precautions to protect yourself from the sun and heat as recommended by Los Angeles County:

  • Avoid the sun from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. when the burning rays are strongest.
  • Reduce physical activity.
  • Wear wide-brimmed hat and light-colored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothes when you are outdoors.
  • Set your air conditioner between 75° to 80°. If you don’t have air-conditioning, take a cool shower twice a day.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, even if you are not thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 if you need to be in the sun.
  • Stay in shade whenever working outdoors.
  • Don’t forget about your pets; they need plenty of water and shade.

Symptoms of dehydration and heat cramps include dizziness, fatigue, faintness, headaches, rapid heartbeat, muscle cramps and increased thirst. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention or call 911.
