City of Glendale and American Green Zone Alliance (AGZA) To Host Joint Press Conference

Celebrating Glendale’s Achievement in Converting all Handheld Landscape Maintenance Equipment to Electric

Glendale, CA –The City of Glendale proudly announces its achievement as the largest city in the nation to earn the American Green Zone Alliance (AGZA) Certified Green Zone designation. This milestone follows the successful conversion of all handheld landscape maintenance equipment to electric, marking a shift towards environmental sustainability and reduced noise pollution.

Transitioning from gas-powered to electric landscaping tools presented challenges, acknowledged by Onnig Bulanikian, Community Services and Parks Director: "We recognized the hurdles in this transition, but it was a necessary step towards fulfilling our commitment to environmental stewardship and enhancing the quality of life for our community. By embracing electric equipment, we are actively reducing emissions and noise levels in Glendale."

Mayor Dan Brotman expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the Community Services and Parks Department, stating, "I commend our Community Services and Parks Department for spearheading this initiative. By achieving this milestone, we demonstrate our commitment to sustainability while ensuring the continued cleanliness and safety of our parks. This accomplishment is a testament to the proactive approach of our city in addressing environmental challenges."

A press conference is scheduled to celebrate this historic achievement on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at the Glendale Sports Complex, located at 2200 Fern Lane, commencing at 1:00 PM.

In alignment with Glendale's commitment to environmental sustainability, the city has implemented measures to enforce its prohibition on gas-powered leaf blowers. Since September 2023, the use of gas-powered leaf blowers has been prohibited, with homeowners and property owners held accountable for compliance. Beginning September 2024, enforcement efforts will be intensified, with penalties for violations as follows:

  • First Violation: Written warning notice with a request for voluntary compliance.
    • Failure to comply within 30 days incurs a $100 administrative fine.
  • Second Violation: $200 administrative fine.
  • Third Violation: $500 administrative fine.

Residents are encouraged to report violations to the City of Glendale's Code Compliance team at (818) 548-3700.
