The City of Glendale Announces its Climate Mobility App

Glendale, California - The City of Glendale’s Department of Public Works, Beeline Transit Service has unveiled its Climate Mobility Application (CMA) that allows people who live, work, and visit Glendale to track how their everyday travel choices can reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The app also has a crowdsourced reporting feature that allows Beeline riders to report on service quality and safety issues to enhance the rider experience.

CMA was launched with the campaign theme, “Bee the Solution and Combat Climate Change." The app was developed to measurably reduce emissions while increasing individual understanding of the environmental impact of travel choices. The app's trip planner provides a tutorial view of the greenhouse gas emissions produced by each travel mode by calculating the GHG reductions achieved using transit or active transportation compared to an average passenger vehicle trip. This app function allows users to make more informed and environmentally conscious travel decisions.

Glendale Mayor Elen Asatryan said the app is another measurable effort by the City to address climate change: “I am excited about the Climate Mobility app’s functionality that allows users to track their personal and our collective efforts to improve our air quality and encourage the use of public transportation. With this technology in their hands, we can encourage all those who live, work, and visit Glendale to take action in reducing emissions. The app will help the City achieve the goals of our Climate Action & Adaptation Plan.”

Beeline’s app was developed over the past year with funding from the California State Transportation Agency’s (CalSTA) Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program, which provides grants from its Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund to underwrite transformative capital improvements that reduce emissions of GHGs. Glendale’s CMA is the first app of its kind developed by a municipality in the State of California and the United States. The app is available for download free of charge on Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store.

App users will be rewarded for their efforts to reduce GHGs with Hive Points. These points accumulate according to their completed trips on Beeline, biking, or walking. The points can be redeemed for Beeline swag and in the future merchandise from Glendale retailers.

The app's safety portion will increase riders' and the public's confidence in Beeline's service. According to Glendale City Manager Roubik Golanian, “Beeline riders should expect a safe and comfortable trip every time they board a Beeline bus. The CMA’s safety component enables riders to report on the quality of their travel as well as to report incidents to Beeline. Having a tool in your hand that can make your trip on Beeline safer will make the service more attractive to potential riders.”
