City of Glendale Releases Unclaimed Checks and Deposits Lists

Glendale, CA – Escheatment is the legal procedure by which ownership of unclaimed private property, such as unclaimed checks and/or deposits, reverts to the government. Payments issued by the City, which are not cashed by their recipients within six (6) months after the date of issue are considered unclaimed checks. Unclaimed deposits are refundable deposits that meet the refund eligibility, which have been unclaimed for a period of over three (3) years. When City-held funds remain unclaimed for this duration, efforts must be made to return them to rightful individuals as per Government Code sections 50050-50056.

According to Sections 50050-50051, the City must publish a public notice listing unclaimed checks and deposits once a week for two consecutive weeks in a local newspaper of general circulation. Subsequently, the unclaimed funds become City property on a specified date, falling within forty-five to sixty days after the initial notice publication. Guidelines for the claiming process are detailed in Section 50052. Section 50053 states that if such money becomes the property of a local agency and is in a special fund, the legislative body may transfer it to the General Fund of the City. Additionally, Section 50055 allows unclaimed funds less than fifteen dollars and over one year old to be transferred to the General Fund without public notice.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT, the Director of Finance/Information Technology of the City of Glendale, County of Los Angeles, State of California, declares that the following monetary sums have been held by the Director of Finance/Information Technology and have remained unclaimed in the funds hereafter indicated for a period of over three (3) years and will become the property of the City of Glendale on the 11th day of June 2024, a date not less than forty-five (45) days nor more than sixty (60) days after first publication of this Notice. Any party of interest may, prior to the date designated herein above, file a claim with the City’s Finance Department, which includes the claimant’s name, address, amount of claim, and the grounds on which the claim is founded.

The Unclaimed Check form & Unclaimed Deposit form can be obtained from the City’s Finance Department at 141 N Glendale Ave, Room 346, Glendale, CA 91206 or from the City’s website. For questions regarding unclaimed checks, please contact the City of Glendale, Finance Department, Accounts Payable at (818) 548-3907. For questions regarding unclaimed deposits, please contact City of Glendale, Finance Department, General Accounting at 818-548-3243.
