City of Glendale Announces Erewhon Will Open in Former Virgil’s Hardware Building
Glendale, CA – The City of Glendale announced that Erewhon, the upscale organic market and café with ten locations across Southern California, has purchased the former Virgil’s Hardware Home Center located at 520 N. Glendale Avenue. In approximately 18 months, Erewhon will open its eleventh location in the building, extending its ability to provide healthy, organic foods to new communities in Los Angeles County.
Founded in 1968, Erewhon has grown into a marquee luxury brand and a hub for healthy groceries, meals, and tonics. They exclusively curate products that support health and wellness, providing its customers with organic, biodynamic, regenerative, and gluten-free alternatives. Through its membership program, Erewhon presents exclusive lifestyle offers and events to its loyal customer base. The Erewhon development team worked closely with Glendale’s Economic Development Division throughout the site selection process. It was drawn to the vacant building for its historic roots and strategic position in the San Fernando Valley.

The vacant building, spanning 24,000 square feet, will be occupied by Erewhon, which plans to utilize 18,000 square feet and lease the additional space to complementary tenants. The development team plans to remodel the facade of the building, upgrade its utilities, and beautify the surrounding area with landscaping and outdoor seating. It will also incorporate architectural nods to the history of Glendale and seek out creative ways to honor the neighborhood’s spirit in the renovation.

The Virgil’s site has a long history in Glendale, operating in the city since 1932. The store was famous for being a quirky source of everything from eggs to 50-year-old doorknobs, setting it apart from larger chain hardware stores. The store closed in 2019 and has remained vacant ever since.
