CITY OF GLENDALE EXTENDS SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR HISTORIC ROCKHAVEN SITE
GLENDALE – On March 17, 2016, the City of Glendale issued a Request for Proposals (“RFP”) seeking qualified firms for the development of a Medical/Mental-Health Related Facility or Boutique Lifestyle Commercial Center for the City-owned Rockhaven Site, located at 2713 Honolulu Avenue, Montrose, CA, 91020.
In response to the number of inquiries, the City of Glendale is extending the submission by five weeks to Tuesday, June 14, 2016. The City has also released a list of Frequently Asked Questions, which can be found here.
Rockhaven refers to the Rockhaven Sanitarium, which was founded by Agnes Richards in 1923 at the Site. It began with a single building, a two-story Craftsman-style “Rockhouse,” which remained the centerpiece of the Site until its demolition following damage in the 1971 earthquake. Over time, Richards acquired neighboring Craftsman homes to incorporate them into a women’s-only facility and one of the first private mental health institutions in California. Rockhaven appears to be eligible for the Glendale and California Registers of Historic Resources.
The City remains dedicated to maintaining the Site’s historic nature while creating open space and accessibility, ensuring compatibility with the neighborhood, and seeking ways in which the site can be utilized by community groups.
Qualified firms with experience in Historic Preservation, Development, Operational Experience, and Adaptive Reuse are encouraged to apply. This Request for Proposals is available here.
