Duties

The Commission on the Status of Women shall assess and evaluate the needs and issues of women in the City in order to inform and advise the City Council, City departments and sections, and other community agencies and organizations of those needs and issues; recommend programs or legislation to the City Council to promote and ensure equal rights and opportunities to and for women in the City; to promote education on issues regarding matters involving the needs of women and to prepare and disseminate such information; provide outreach information and education that empowers women to achieve self-sufficiency and self-esteem; maintain an active liaison with groups, organizations, agencies and individuals in regard to issues related to women; perform other duties as may be imposed upon the Commission by the City Council by ordinance or resolution.

Membership

  • Five members
  • Four year terms
  • Two term limit
  • Two (2) student ex officio non-voting members serve one year terms and are appointed by the commission.
  • No compensation

Qualifications

The five (5) members of the commission on the status of women shall be electors of the City of Glendale at the time of their appointment and during incumbency. The two (2) student ex officio members shall be students at the high school level or above. The five (5) members of the commission shall be individuals who have exhibited leadership qualities in the community or other activities relating to the general welfare of women. Elected officials may not serve on the commission. Active commissioners are not allowed to serve on more than one board/commission/committee (as defined in Title 2 of the Glendale Municipal Code) at the same time.

Student Commissioner Applications- CLOSED

Ex Officio Student Commissioners are active, non-voting members of the Commission on the Status of Women. It is an opportunity for students to advance social justice and equity and ensure equality of rights and opportunities for all women and girls in Glendale.

Deadline to apply is currently CLOSED. Please note that candidate interviews will be held virtually. The term for being a Student Commissioner is 1-year from your start date.

Ex Officio Student Commissioner Qualification

  • Enrolled in high school level or college
  • Reside in the City of Glendale
  • Under the age of 25
  • Available the second Monday evening at 4:00 pm on a quarterly basis to participate in Commission meetings (attendance in person is mandatory)
