What are KPIs?

Key Performance Indicators or KPIs are the metrics we use to measure performance. They allow us to evaluate the success of City activities and programs. We help keep track of KPIs based on the 10 priorities established by the City Council:

Performance Spotlight:

COVID-19 Dashboard   We partnered with the Glendale Fire Department and 11 cities in the Governor's Office of Emergency Services Region 1, Area C to create data dashboards that visualize COVID-19 related information across the region. The dashboards aggregate data from Area C Battalion Chief reports, 911 call data form the Verdugo Dispatch Center, the Los Angeles County Department of Health and Human Services, and the County Department of Public Health. This allows the 48 fire stations in the region to quickly access high-level information, and allows City leadership to easily understand trends and make decisions backed by data.

In Progress:

Share Critical COVID-19 Information with the Community Using Data Dashboards

We created a data dashboard for the community to better understand how COVID-19 is moving through Glendale. An average of over 1,000 visitors per day visit the page since its creation in March 2020. The dashboard helps City leadership make decisions backed by data and helps residents better understand how Glendale compares to the larger region at a quick glance without having to read lengthy reports.

Collect and Simplify City Metrics to Share with the Public

Budget Book

We are in partnership with the Finance Department to create the annual Strategic Goals section of Glendale's Budget Book. This public document shows how the City's priorities and objectives are linked and tracked through key performance indicators. It serves to connect the everyday work of each employee to the high-level mission that the City Council strives to achieve.

Past Projects:

Identify Faulty Transformers In Advance Using Machine Learning

Inspired by a recent audit, the Office of Innovation & Performance partnered with Glendale Water and Power (GWP) to develop a machine learning model. As of March 2018, 25% of Glendale’s active transformers were more than 40 years old, nearing the ideal time for them to be replaced. GWP will now be able to better predict when transformers will fail and which transformer types fair better than others under certain conditions. This tool will empower GWP staff to make more informed decisions when stocking their transformer inventory.

Creating Pothole Reporting Efficiencies with Automation

We partnered with a group of Lean Six Sigma trained staff and the Public Works Department to evaluate the pothole reporting process and recording systems. Around 2,000 potholes are filled each quarter in Glendale by the Street Maintenance Crew. Recommendations from the Lean Six Sigma team anticipate a 60% efficiency in the reporting process by implementing automation to the process using existing technologies.
