Residential Burglaries, Signal Blockers and Safety Tips

GLENDALE, CA – The Glendale Police Department (GPD) is issuing an advisory in response to recent residential burglaries.

Southern California has seen a rise in residential burglaries over the last several months. As a result, the Glendale Police Department proactively established the GPD Residential Burglary Taskforce. The task force is comprised of GPD patrol and motor officers, Special Enforcement Detail, detectives, and undercover officers. To date, the taskforce has been responsible for a significant decrease in residential burglaries in Glendale and several arrests.

In some cases, suspects have used technology to assist their criminal efforts. Suspects are using Wi-Fi signal blockers to evade detection from home security alarms and cameras. Signal-blocking devices allow individuals to unlawfully enter homes undetected. This technology disrupts the signals emitted by home Wi-Fi systems, cutting the feed of traditional home security systems and cameras, and rendering them ineffective in alerting homeowners or law enforcement to the presence of intruders. These incidents have raised significant concerns regarding the safety and security of our community.

While investigations into these incidents are ongoing, we urge residents to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to enhance the security of their homes and neighborhoods.

Safety Tips for Residential Security:
Hardwire Your Alarm System and Cameras: Ensure your home security alarm is hardwired to prevent susceptibility to signal interference and minimize vulnerability to signal blockers.

Secure Gates: Strengthen security around your property by installing sturdy locks on gates that restrict access to your property or backyard.

Enhance Exterior Lighting: Illuminate the exterior of your home with motion-activated lights to deter potential intruders and increase visibility at night.

Back-up Batteries: Equip your security cameras and alarm systems with back-up batteries to ensure continuous operation during power outages or disruptions.

Secure Second-Story Windows and Balconies: Install locks or additional security measures on second-story windows and balconies to prevent unauthorized entry.

Neighborhood Watch and House Sitters: Establish connections with trusted neighbors who can keep an eye on your home while you're away and consider bringing a house sitter to provide additional security and occupancy.

The Glendale Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. We encourage residents to report any suspicious activity or concerns promptly. By working together, we can create a safer environment for all residents.

The Glendale Police Department asks anyone with information to assist in these cases contact us immediately by calling 818-548-4911.

To remain anonymous, call the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477) or go directly to www.lacrimestoppers.org
