Workday Programs


The Restoration Program was the first program to be implemented and had its origins after the Station Fire which burned more than 700 acres in Deukmejian Wilderness Park. Over one hundred big cone spruce and coast live oaks have been planted since 2010 in the lower reaches of the park. The Department established the “Wilderness Workday” - and invited members of the community to plant trees, water trees, and remove invasive plants from the park. The response was tremendous. This program has become enormously popular with church groups, community organizations, and students from area schools. A similar workday program has been added to the Glendale Narrows Riverwalk. Volunteers can join us to remove invasive plants from the landscaped areas along the L.A. River. Both programs are perfect for families, individuals, clubs, and students needing community service hours. Please wear protective clothing and bring water. Please RSVP at GlendaleCA.gov/Trails.

Interpretive Programs

The Department offers a wide array of interpretive programs, some led by local experts from the community. The Friday Night Lecture series has programs on wildlife, native California plants, eco-gardening, and the history of the area. Interpretive hikes have been held on many subjects such as medicinal use of native plants, birdwatching, geology, herpetology, butterflies, bees and our local wildlife.

Campfire Program

The Campfire program, held on summer nights, is geared toward family fun. We start with a craft for young people, followed by songs and skits. The main program is on subjects ranging from hiking safety, earth sciences, to spotlights on wildlife. In 2023, we had Batty for Bats and Who are you? Hoo Hoo? – all about owls. We end the program making s’mores around the campfire.

Glendale Outdoors! (GO!) Program


Glendale Outdoors! (GO!) Program is a nature education program for children to go outdoors and learn about our natural environment in Glendale’s backyard. There are 2 different programs offered through GO! GO! Outdoors! (One Glendale) Program is a nature education program for children between the ages of eight and twelve. Working with the GUSD collaborative One Glendale Afterschool Program, staff takes kids from neighborhoods in south Glendale to a Glendale park for a morning of outdoor games, nature crafts, interpretive hikes, and environmental education. This program is partially funded by the Glendale Parks & Open Space Foundation. GO! Outdoors! (Community) Program is a once-a-month program for families to spend some quality time enjoying the great outdoors! We invite the public to join us for an interpretive hike in Deukmejian Wilderness Park, a nature craft, nature themed games, and a tour of the Stone Barn Nature Center. We will provide water, snacks, and bus transportation from Pacific Park Community Center for those who need it. The bus leaves the community center at 8:30 a.m. and returns at 12:30 p.m. For those wishing to join us at the Deukmejian Wilderness Park on their own, the program begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 12:00 p.m.
