The City of Glendale has designated the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, as recommended by CalFire, depicted on the map. The Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps are developed using a science-based and field-tested model that assigns a hazard score based on the factors that influence fire likelihood and fire behavior. Many factors are considered such as fire history, existing and potential fuel (natural vegetation), predicted flame length, blowing embers, terrain, and typical fire weather for the area.

The map is used to: implement wildland-urban interface building standards for new construction, determine the 100-foot defensible space clearance requirements around buildings, and ensure property development standards such as road widths, water supply and signage consideration in the City general plan.

The City of Glendale has modified the CalFire map to show High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, Very High Hazard Severity Zones and Ember Intrusion Zones. If your property is located in any one of these zones you will receive an inspection from the Glendale Fire Department.

Property owners within this designated area are required to maintain a defensible space around their homes by ensuring hazardous vegetation is abated and that all grass, weeds, shrubs and trees are properly maintained.
