Program Overview

Glendale Water & Power (GWP) department currently owns and operates approximately 98 miles of fiber optic network within Glendale’s city limits. The existing service is only dark fiber and the majority of connections are for municipal and utility communication systems with limited commercial access.

In order to meet the increasing demand for high speed fiber optic services in the City of Glendale, the City Council has authorized the development of a Fiber Optic Business Plan. This plan envisions expanding fiber infrastructure throughout the City to create a high speed broadband fiber network and necessary business organization required to expand the City’s operation as a provider.

In order to implement the fiber business plan, GWP is embarking on an ambitious project to install a new high speed fiber broadband network at an approximate cost of $10 million. This network project when completed would provide access to high speed communication services to the business community in Glendale, as well as anchor institutions, City facilities etc. GWP has hired Magellan Advisors as the consultant for this project and has completed the design of the network. GWP has hired HHS Construction LLC to install the fiber optic backbone for the network at a price tag of $5.6 million. The construction work involves attaching fiber optic cable on utility power poles along public rights-of-way and also in the rear property lines. Some sections of the project are underground which means the contractor would be pulling in cables through existing underground vaults, pull boxes and conduits and in some locations, installing new substructures for this project. GWP and HHS Construction would take every possible step to minimize the impact on the residents and the commuting public of Glendale, but some lane closures, traffic re-routing etc. cannot be avoided and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.  We will make every effort to provide as much notice as possible to the residents via flyers, street signs and door hangers. Construction is expected to take approximately one year and is slated to start in July 2022.
