Public Works has developed three phases to provide Safe Routes To School (SRTS) to reduce injuries and fatalities to students while encouraging increased walking and bicycling. The three phases include constructing facilities and enhancing the safety of pathways, trails, sidewalks and crosswalks for pedestrians and bicyclists who are primarily in grades K-12. Staff applied for several SRTS grants and received over $3,000,000 for safety-related improvements and educational programs for schools in the Glendale Unified School District (“GUSD”). As a part of those grants, the City sponsored a series of educational programs for students and parents include a Walk-To-School Program, International Walk-To-School Day and bike safety classes for various schools
