If pruning is necessary, now is the time to perform this type of maintenance, while the branches are bare and before new leaf buds break (usually in early spring). Our native plane tree, Platanus racemosa, is a unique individual in the sycamore family. Commonly called the Western or California sycamore, this tree is found only in this region of the country. It remains a stable historic component in the California landscape of stream sides, rocky canyons, moist valleys, and arid foothills.

The mulch is a product of the City’s tree trimming operations that is replenished regularly and the amounts vary from week to week. Anytime is a great time to add a layer of mulch to your landscape. Mulch suppresses weeds, holds moisture and supplies nutrients to the soil. The Free Mulch Program has allowed Glendale to give back to the community and the environment by converting unusable green material into a valuable resource. Residents may pick up loads of tree trimming mulch from Brand Park using their own vehicles and tools and at their own risk.
