The Cottage Grove Historic District consists of 14 homes on the one-block stretch of Cottage Grove Avenue that represent one of the City's most interesting examples of early residential tract development. Located at the foot of Adams Hill, the district is one of the few areas we know of where a developer sought to create a unique neighborhood identity by giving the homes a uniform typology ("cottages") and style (Tudor Revival) to give residents the sense of living in an "English village." As such, it is an excellent example of a Glendale neighborhood where most homes were built within a short time span and largely incorporated the same basic architectural vocabulary. In addition, the intermixing of these "English" style homes with a few Spanish Colonial Revival-style homes is consistent with development patterns found in Glendale and throughout the nation during the 1920s, when it was common for new neighborhoods to feature homes designed in a wide variety of Period Revival styles built side by side. The district is also notable for its 1901 farmhouse that was owned by the woman who initially sold the land that the neighborhood was built upon.
